Outlands - Broken English [Marianne Faithfull]

Pulled from their marvelous debut Outlands EP (released on one of my favorite labels, Chill Mega Chill), Broken English [Marianne Faithfull] is a stunning jam. Fueled by beautifully retro inspired synths and dance beats, Outlands takes these influences and puts a modern, darker, spin on them. 

The vocals are simply hypnotic, matching this darker aesthetic in terms of delivery and texture, while production-wise they are touched with just the right amount of echo at just the right times. There’s a lot of movement and detail to this song, as well as the rest of this release, and it leads to an infectious tune that carries more weight and evokes more emotion than tracks that are simply ‘catchy’.
